How To Best Deal With that Stiff Neck
from: Dr. B.We all have woken up with a stiff and sore neck at one time in our lives. Most people will either ignore it or just take some aspirin to get rid of the pain. What we do at this point can make a dramatic difference in your overall health for the rest of your life.
What is truly incredible is when you realize the neck must be strong enough to protect the very delicate nerve tissue of the spinal cord yet it must afford us the movement necessary to be able to turn our head 1800 degrees, and look up and down. With all that movement the neck must be strong enough to support the 10 pound head atop it even during these extreme movements.
The neck is made up of seven spinal vertebral bones. A severe injury to the neck can cause paralysis or even death due to injury to the spinal cord and the life giving nerve tissue within it.
The cervical vertebrae are linked to one another by discs, ligaments, and tendons that allow remarkable flexibility. The normal shape of the neck rather than straight, is a gentle curve, called the cervical curve.
Many everyday habits or activities can contribute to neck pain. Sleeping in an awkward position, slumping over a desk, overwork, squeezing a telephone between the ear and shoulder, or straining to see over a steering wheel ail may cause muscle fatigue or strains.
Anger, fear or mental stress can cause neck muscles to tighten which, if prolonged, can lead to painful muscle spasms. Tension headaches also frequently follow bouts with neck pain.

slumping head forward
work related
falling down
laughing
Occasional minor stiffness or strain is nothing to worry about. Often it will clear up with a good night's sleep.
While taking an pain killer might make you feel better for the short term, it does nothing towards correcting the problem that caused your neck pain. A chiropractic doctor will get to the root cause of your neck pain and correct the problem.
